Find search competitors, not just business competitors

Start with the domains repeatedly appearing for your target topics. They may include publishers, marketplaces and directories that do not look like direct commercial rivals.

Compare keyword and page overlap

Look for topics where competitors earn meaningful visibility and you have weak or no coverage. Then inspect the actual SERPs to understand the expected page type and intent.

Use backlinks as context

Link profiles can explain why strong pages outperform you, but avoid copying a competitor's link tactics mechanically. Look for relevant sources and patterns that make sense for your own publication.

Turn research into a finite plan

Consolidate overlapping keyword families into useful destinations. Competitor analysis should improve prioritization, not inflate page count.
