How to Run a Website Audit

A practical website-audit workflow covering crawlability, indexing, technical issues, content, internal links, and prioritization.

1. Confirm crawlability and index controls

Check robots directives, canonicals, noindex rules, redirects and status codes before spending time on cosmetic issues.

2. Inspect architecture and internal links

Important pages should have clear paths from hubs and navigation. Find orphan pages, broken links and unnecessary crawl paths.

3. Review templates and on-page signals

Look for duplicate or missing titles, headings, thin templates, incorrect canonicals and inconsistent metadata at scale.

4. Prioritize by impact

Do not treat every crawler warning equally. Fix issues that affect discovery, indexation, rendering, user experience or important search destinations first.

5. Recrawl after changes

An audit is a monitoring process, not a one-time report. Compare before and after states and keep a record of material fixes.
