Monitor change, not vanity totals

Total backlink count can fluctuate for reasons that do not matter. Focus on new/lost referring domains, important links, target pages and patterns that affect authority or discovery.

Inspect context

A link's relevance, placement and source matter more than raw count. Watch whether important pages are earning links and whether strong links disappear.

Competitor monitoring

New competitor referring domains can reveal publications, partnerships and resources worth understanding. Use them as research leads, not as a checklist to copy.

Connect links to pages

When a hub or commercial page lacks authority, identify strong internal pages that can contextual-link to it before assuming external links are the only solution.
